George asks…

I accidentally deleted My recycle bin on windows vista home basic. How do I get it back?

I accidentally deleted my recycle bin on windows vista basic. How do I get it back. I have not backed up my files yet. I don’t know what to do. When I did deleted, it told me how to restore it, but I wasn’t paying attention. I thought I was emptying the bin and not deleting it. So please tell me how to get it back. Thanks a million.

The Expert answers:

Just use recovery program like recuva … It’s freeware
recuva.com
http://www.gunungpring.com/wordpress/recuva-file-recovery/

if it’s not successfull …
Try getdataback for ntfs or fat depends on your hard disk …
But it’s not free …
Try the freeware then if the data is still seen by getdataback …
You can buy it to recover the data ,,,

Helen asks…

Is it possible to recover files deleted from the recycle bin?

My son somehow deleted almost all of my files from my desktop, many with photos. They are not showing up in the recycle bin. Is there any hope at all of ever getting them back?

The Expert answers:

Files you deleted from recycle bin were not erased permanently. They are just inaccessible or invisible. The space your deleted files located on is marked as free space that can be occupied or taken by new data. Therefore, you can recover your deleted files from emptied recycle bin with third party data recovery software.I have succeed with Asoftech data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data you accidentally deleted. By the way,you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your deleted files can be recovered. Get it from http://www.asoftech.com/adr/

Donald asks…

How can I take off my recycle bin icon from my desktop?

I’m trying to have my desktop clear of any and all icons. How can I remove the recycle bin icon?

The Expert answers:

Powertoys for Windows xp

Charles asks…

How does one back up the Windows 7 Recycle Bin?

A few weeks ago, I ran a program to clean up duplicate files, all duplicates went to the recycle bin. It has a LOT of stuff in it. In the 3-4 weeks since then, I’ve encountered a couple of minor problems which I recovered from the recycle bin. I’d like to empty it now, but only if I can back it up first – so that I can recover things if anything else comes up missing. Can the recycle bin be backed up?

The Expert answers:

Hi there,

Just create a new folder on the Desktop called “Recycle Bin Backup” and copy everything from the Recycle Bin into it. Copy the folder onto an external hard drive if you like.

Cheers,

Susan asks…

How to recover files deleted in Recycle Bin?

I’ve seen a lot of programs searching through google, but is there anything that is free, and extremely effective at recovering files deleted through recycle bin?

The Expert answers:

Recuva from Piriform

Donna asks…

How can I verify that my recycle bin is permanently ,and irretrievably deleted?

Before giving my old computer away , I want to be sure all personal vital information is irretrievably removed. When I now clik on the Recycle Bin it shows a blank screen …Empty ! Is it totally cleared ?

The Expert answers:

The best thing to do is to download a shredder for when you get a document you want to delete, when you delete something in your recylce bin, sometimes there are bits of data left over, my good friend is a forensic computist, and there isnt much he cant find on a computer, but it takes days just to recover the smallest thing, so i wouldnt worry about it. Unless you work for the CIA or something.

James asks…

How do I find my lost recycle bin on my Windows xp?

I can’t find the recycle bin on my desktop computer and I’ve tried pretty much everything. Even if I do properties, desktop (tab), the recycle bin doesn’t show up. If you have and answer, I’ll try it it and if I find it, thanks!

The Expert answers:

First perform a search for “Recycling Bin” by going to Start, Search.

That probably won’t work, I’m looking up more information on your problem. I’ll edit this later.

*Edit: Here you go!

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Appearance and Personalization, click Personalization, and then click Change desktop icons.
3. Click to select the Recycle Bin check box, and then click OK.

*Edit: That may work, but I think that’s only for Vista. Try right-clicking your desktop and selecting “properties.” On the window that comes up, select the “desktop” tab, then click “customize desktop.” On the next window, select “recycle bin (full)” and click “restore default,” then repeat with “recycle bin (empty).”

Robert asks…

what happens to old videotapes when you throw them in the recycle bin ?

i am concerned that I am not sure if the best way to dispose of all of these old video tapes, I have, is to throw them in the recycle bin ?
What happens to all of these old video tapes, when we do this ?

If I put all my old video tapes in the recycle bin, will this keep all my old video tapes, from winding up in a landfill ?

I have enough old video tapes to make some kind of a large outrageous “art” statement.

I have this dream to find an artist that would help me start an art project.

I would like to find a place to display a large “art thing” made of Old video tapes – This could be done easily by taking all the old videotapes, I have and gluing them or melting them together and spelling out, “Love the Earth – Recycle” and then I would just have to find a place where it could be displayed some where.

The Expert answers:

Those should not be put into the recycling bin, they are not recyclable.

Chris asks…

How do you recycle a document without clicking on the recycle bin?

How do you recycle a document without clicking on the recycle bin? It can be done. This is a computer test question at ivy tech.

Daniel asks…

Apartment complex recycling!?

I am starting a recycling company where we will be specifically targeting apartment complexes, condominiums, and other multi-family dwellings. That’s right, we’re providing the recycling option to residents of apt complexes, condos and like housing. For each unit, we’re providing the bins, and we’ll pick it up door to door. For some places, we’ll arrange for a very large bin, similar to your dumpsters for recycling. Provided that with recycling, you’ll cut down on enough waste that your property managers won’t need multiple dumpsters, then there shouldn’t be any space issues with getting our recycling containers into your parking lot. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as funding, government benefits, marketing, operating procedures, etc? We already have a business plan and marketing plan. Just looking for innovative ideas. You can answer here or email me at: langi.glr@gmail.com

The Expert answers:

I think this is a fabulous idea! I just read this article on this site about apartment complexes getting into ‘going green’ and it’s such an important ‘trend’!! I’m not sure about the financial issues for this, but I do know that for marketing you should def go to apartment communities and talk to them about the importance of this and the benefit to their tenants or advertise in publications with apartment communities (like For Rent Magazine). You could do the push method (going to apartment communities and asking them to use your service) or the pull method (by advertising to consumers and asking them to tell their apartment community/leasing office/management companies that they want ‘green living’ offered). I know I would jump all over that in my apartment complex!! KUDOS!!!

Richard asks…

I need recycling opinions for the opposing view for my paper. Please help! Click for details!?

I am wiritng a paper about the good of recycling and how recycling should be brought into our community. However in our community I need to bring up opposing views maybe about how it’s a waste of time and money or something. My plan is to bring recycling containers to all households. So if anyone have opinions I could use.. it’d be greatly appreciated. I am too much for it to have an opposing view. I’ll choose the first answer I get with actual facts for best answer but all opinions are welcome! You’ll still get a couple of points for answering 🙂

The Expert answers:

I too am a fan of recycling, but there is a time where it can get to be too much to handle on a personal level. For instance, I don’t recycle newspapers. I don’t have the storage area to save and store everything. Some items such as newspapers can become a nesting place for our rodents. I also don’t recycle milk cartons. They are bulky and cumbersome to store. Plus, not all recycle places take that type of plastic. Our blue trash cans that are picked up, do the job for me.

Mandy asks…

An idea how to recycle all plastic waste?

Most plastics will melt under intense heat so why not make water container, massive one’s then install them in the roof space of commercial buildings to collect rainwater and then use the rainwater to flush toilets.why use drinking water to flush toilets.think how much water a city like london and New York uses just to flush the toilets.I have more ideas to recycle all the waste plastics that is just thrown away.LET ME HEAR YOU PEOPLE.

The Expert answers:

Plastics are toxic and most aren’t food safe. Currently most if not all buildings have a single source of water and it would take massive renovations to put a second water source for toilets only. This may be a possibility for a new building, but unlikely, the amount of water needed to flush toilets in a large building would take a massive tank and would be a structural nightmare. There are gray water systems in smaller buildings and homes which may be a more practical solution.

Steven asks…

The Four-Bin Recycling Challenge?

Currently, where I live in Surrey we have all been issued with four plastic containers in which to dispose of our household rubbish.

One very large green bin for everything that can be recycled.
One small green bin for all food waste.
One even smaller grey bin to keep indoors for food waste.
One very large grey bin for everything else.

Fine. I’m all for recycling, so it’s not a problem despite the ruddy things taking up three-quarters of my garden.

However, I was a little disgruntled (word of the week) this morning when I saw the bin men emptying the food waste straight into the recycled waste bin before depositing the lot (all mixed up together) in the back of their truck.

Can someone explain what this is all about? Am I simply wasting (every pun intended) my time by sorting out my rubbish into different categories?
Nope, no garden waste but please don’t suggest it or I’ll have no space left in my garden at all and I’ll have to sell my lawn mower on Ebay!

The Expert answers:

Phone your council and make a complaint. By adding the food waste into the recycling bin they have contaminated it so that the whole lot is unfit for recycling. Where in surrey are you? As my husband is the waste recycling manager for part of Surrey. So I can give him a call now if you wish.

David asks…

Recycling – Should it be a free choice to do it?

My local council in England have introduced fortnightly collections of our general household waste, and a weekly collection of recyclable rubbish. It’s like imposing recycling on us, otherwise live with rotting trash bags in our garden. I am not against recycling, but I am pro choice. We are supposed to wash out every can and bottle, plastic container and save every paper. Great if you are single, retired or have lots of spare time – but try it with 4 kids (one in nappies), 2 dogs, 2 businesses to run. I pay so much tax, yet now they do not serve my trash needs. What can I do?

The Expert answers:

Makes one wonder how much water will be wasted washing out all those cans and bottles! Spend a dollar to save a nickel is not always the right choice. But that seems to be the governments answer to everything. Also, some recyclables actually use MORE energy to recycle than to make new. Is this “saving?”

Ken asks…

Recycling questions: cigarette butts, air filters, food wrappers, bathroom waste?

We are doing a project for work trying to eliminate all possible waste from our facility and are hitting a few roadblocks. We have the sand filled cigarette disposals, but what do you do with the butts when the container is filled?
What about food-tainted waste (usually wrappers)? Our local recycler won’t take any paper that has touched food.
We also want to know if it’s possible to recycle bathroom paper towels we use to dry our hands.
Lastly, what should you do with old industrial air filters? We send them out to get re-cleaned, but you can only do that so many times. What do you do with them when it’s finally time to pitch them?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Expert answers:

Fag buts are awful! Not the baccy but the plastic based filter, take years to break down. Energy from waste the only solution there, our real rubbish goes to one, so guilt free hooray!
Same with food tainted waste, unless paper, which can be composted. Towels can go with paper if only wet, otherwise as above.

Filters, encourage the people who reclean them to set up specialist recycling service, as they are bound to be mixed materials.

Betty asks…

Recycle Coffee Containers?

I am always throwing away those large plastic coffee containers which seems like a big waste. Does anybody have any recycle ideas? Specifically, some sort of arts & crafts activity with kids.

The Expert answers:

You can clean them out and cover with colorful paper to make fun containers. You could make or buy some bean bags and set out the cans for a beanbag toss game. Put different things inside them (rice, beans, jingle bells, etc) and glue the lids on to make shakers. Give the kids some serving spoons to use as drumsticks and make drums. Line the inside of the can with paper, drop in some paint and a couple of marbles or ping pong balls, put the lid on, and shake, shake, shake. Cut the bottoms off several cans and tape/glue them together to make a tunnel for toy cars.

Or you could set out the cans and a whole bunch of art materials (paint, scissors, glue, paper, magazines, etc) and let the kids use their imagination to create something wonderful.

Laura asks…

Question about recycling?

This is not a normal recycling question so brace yourself..

I work in a laboratory for a sewage treatment plant and we collect samples in small plastic bottles. The samples include… you guessed it, poop related things such as septic waste, portable toilet, raw sewage..ect.

Someone got the idea that we should recycle these bottles when we were done with them. I mentioned that this may be a problem due to it’s possible classification of “biohazard”. They told me to just rinse them out and they will be fine.

Has anyone dealt with something like this before? I’m going to contact the recycling center later today, but I was just wondering if anyone knew offhand. I personally think it’s unsafe and disgusting to even think about recycling these containers at a public recycling center.

We have no way to sterilize them here at the plant.

The Expert answers:

This is interesting! When you have contacted the Recycling Center, will you please e-mail me (go to my Profile) and let me know what they tell you?

My husband and I run our city’s Recycling Center, and we are not allowed to accept containers that held hazardous materials (i.e., pesticides, herbicides, motor oil, antifreeze). Our understanding is that recycling of containers that held hazardous waste is not allowed, or at least not allowed here in Oklahoma.

However, your situation is slightly different. The Recycling Center you call may need some time to research the question.

As another poster mentioned, there would be actual people handling these containers, and as you probably know, simple rinsing would not remove all the potential pathogens from the containers.

And I’m not sure that the temperatures involved in the recycling process for plastic would be sufficient to kill all the pathogens involved, but then I’m not a laboratory worker.

Again, what an interesting Question! Would you mind letting me know what the Recycling Center tells you? I will also ask my husband about this and e-mail you with his comments, if that’s OK with you.

Sandra asks…

How Many Cans Does a Garbage Bag Hold?

I’m going to start recycling aluminum cans for a little extra cash. Most places pay by the bound and I know that it takes between 28 and 32 aluminum cans to make a pound. What I want to know is about how many crushed aluminum cans does an average sized plastic garbage bag hold?

The Expert answers:

We have several plastic garbage bags, one is around 16 gallons, one 33 gallons, and one is 55 gallons for yard waste. I don’t know for sure but I think you’ll get about 15 crushed cans per gallon.

Centers here pay recycling value for small amounts of cans, and a lesser weight based value for larger quantities of cans.

James asks…

Where can you buy these garbage bags HELP!?

If read about this on every blog, but they don’t say where you can buy them, or give a site where you can buy them, and they dont even have a name:

http://www.doobybrain.com/2009/04/22/recycled-paper-trash-bagsliners/
I was going to use it for dry garbage

The Expert answers:

This is a seriously bad product…One person…one …putting a liquid in there inadvertently and you ruin the stack. Just take the plastic supermarket bags shove a handful in the bottom of the trash and line with the top one..you have an extra always waiting that can accept anything you toss at it.

Chris asks…

How good is the recycling program in your city?

Mine is great: We have boxes to put by the road for compost, paper/plastic, and we also put garbage bags by the road.

The Expert answers:

Cleveland is pretty good. I recycle all my paper, and most of my plastic and metal. The trash cans on the sidewalk have recycling as well.

Cleveland is so awesome. 🙂

Sharon asks…

What is the approximate amount I can get for 30 gallon garbage bag filled with allumanim cans?

I filled a 30 gallon garbage bag with alluminum cans. Does anyone know approximately how much money I will get when I go to recycle them? They are not squished down, but the bag is filled to capacity

The Expert answers:

In Missouri the average range is 45-65 cents per pound. Depending on the weight per bag you can figure out how much you are suppose to get. I would get the phone book and call a few places to check the current rate for aluminum cans

Nancy asks…

kitchen garbage and cleaning?

do u change garbage bag everyday. where to put recycle in the kitchen?whats the best way to keep kitchen clean by throwing all the trash?

The Expert answers:

This isn’t entirely clear, but I’ll try to answer.
1) No, I don’t change my garbage bag every day. However, I also don’t put any “wet” garbage in it– bones, food items for instance. So my garbage is generally “dry” and “clean”.
2) I keep my recycle stuff clean– I wash and dry it and put it in a plastic bag since I don’t have a bin for recycle. Including aluminum foil. Keeps bugs away.
3) Keeping the kitchen clean is a matter of clearing all your mess, washing what needs washing and putting everything away- at the least, daily. There isn’t any other way– except I rinse my dishes and put them in the dishwasher– which I do not run daily.
Hope this helps you.
Good luck

Linda asks…

Do you recycle or do you throw it all in the garbage?

Do you recycle your garbage, or do you just throw it in the regular trash? We have curbside recycling service, but everything goes into the regular garbage anyway. It’s just easier to take the garbage out twice a day, then one bag a day and reycling once a week.

I know “everyone should do there part,” but honestly it’s just easier to throw it all away.

The Expert answers:

I recycle, because it helps the earth, and it makes me feel happy when I do something right. You just have to know what to recycle, and what not to.
😀

Maria asks…

Taking garbage and putting it into the recycle…?

what will happen to someone if they get caught taking garbage out of the trash can and putting it into the recycling can?

the garbage man didnt come and the garbage got real full, and so my manager is taking all the garbage (bags) and trhwoing it in to the recycling, so it’s not recyclebles. and now the recycle bin is overflowing with trash. and there was even a sign that was in front of the recycle before that said no garbage.

isn’t that really bad??
I wish i could get thsi guy to stop because he always does it whenver the garbage gets full.
who do you call if you see someone doing this?

The Expert answers:

I don’t know what would happened to the guy who is doing all this crap but you should go talk to him first before taking any actions because this guy and you can get into a big feud….tell this guy that what he is doing is wrong and he should stop but if this continues than tell someone in your communinty who takes care of the garbage and recycling centers:D

Hope I HELPED:D

Joseph asks…

Should recycling be the norm? Like if they just picked it up on the curb like regular garbage?

Instead of carting it down to the plant? If all you had to do was throw your compostables into a different bag and they came and removed both, would you be willing to do it?

The Expert answers:

Lots of communities do that. And I believe it should be the norm.

I think A LOT more people would recycle if they didn’t have to go out of their way to do it. If it were just as simple as putting it out on your curb once a week, I think if some sort of statistics would show the amount being recycled in towns that pick up recycle containers as opposed to what’s being recycled where they do not, I believe there would be a HUGE difference….you’d think someone would get a clue..

George asks…

how can i get a recycling can for my apartment building?

There’s only the normal non-recycable cans on the alley of my apprtment building.

Are there any bags or cans/bins u can buy in the store that are marked for recycling and that the garbage man can take it to recycle?

The Expert answers:

Or call your local recycling center.

Picture recovery from recycle bin!!!!!!!?

Hey,

Is there absolutely any way that I can restore a picture that has been deleted from my recycle bin? I had a picture that I really needed for school that my brother maliciously deleted on me.

Thanks for your help

The Expert answers:

Recuva (http://www.recuva.com/ ) is free. But the more you do with the computer, the better the chance that you’ll overwrite the file. Download the program to a flash drive, using another computer, put the flash drive into yours and run the program.

Betty asks…

What would you change in your school?

so now i have the opportunity to change my school positively but not everything of course just few important things.
I go to a private school – girls section only – .
Just write a lot and make it reasonable if you may.
for e.g ; fire math teachers , kill biology teacher -.- like really ? seriously ?.
Anyway!, what I got up are few and i need help like ASAP!;
1.Stick to a schedule of tests .
e.g ; we have this schedule and the teachers don’t follow it so we get all messed up with tests projects and homework. Following it makes everything better .
2. Improve the quality of school meals .
e.g ; i’ve been to this school since i was in 7th grade and believe me !! same food ever since :/ its .. not cool and not any food of course ;
u know we don’t have those trays and chicken sandwiches hamburger and all so we just eat cheese sandwich with milk or juice and we have corn u know basics and its not that tasty :/ at all!.
3. Increase physical activities to decrease obesity.
e.g ; we have only two periods aka classes of gym in a week – 40 minutes (times ) 40 = 1600 minutes a week. So , students in my school aren’t fat or skinny few skinny and few are fat and most are either on the curve of being fat or being anorexic .
4. GO GREEN!;
* REcycle bins.
( paper – ALUMINIUM – glass).
*Change school water fountain for less using of water bottles. ( our school’s water fountain tastes like metal :/ ).
5. Library BOOKS! ( we have old history books and not much of educated new books as in for 2010 or 2009 mostly in the 90’s and older ).

It will mean so much to me!! i’ll give BEST ANSWER!
I really do appreciate . THANK YOU! <3

The Expert answers:

What would i change in my school? Well that’s easy, i’d want more money toward arts programs.

Susan asks…

Go Green?!?

A few friends and I have recently started a go green club at school. The response to this club was tremendous. Were trying to think of ideas on making our school and surrounding area eco-friendly. Our first few simple ideas were getting recycling bins for our school, decorating our courtyard with flowers, and replacing our regular sink faucets with motion censored ones. Were also planning on holding a volleyball tournament to raise money for a unicef/helping the enviroment type organization. Any ideas for organizations that we can become involved with or any ideas for our community or school would be greatly appreciated. thanks =)

The Expert answers:

Our school is participating in a kind of go green movement. Our school has a recycling bin from www.paperretriever.com in every classroom and the healthy environment and recycling clubs come around and pick them up about once a week. There has been a huge turnout and many teachers are now telling students to always put all papers into the recycling bins. Good luck with your movement; it’s amazing.!!! :]

Helen asks…

Recycling for our school?

Ok, so i want to put recycling bins in all the classrooms (im president of the school) but my principal says only if i can think of a way for kids not to throw stuff like gum and tissues and “non paper” items in there. Any ideas?? we tried this 10 years in a row and it ddiiidnt work. shes giving me the LAST chance. please help thanks

The Expert answers:

If u have some money, buy some CCTV above the recycling bins to watch over the student….

Or

u can pay the student every 2 kg when he/she recycle

Linda asks…

How do I make my friend more aware?

Here’s the thing, I’m a huge green freak. I’m very aware that helping the environment is very important right now, so I’ve been doing everything I can. But my friend ALWAYS makes fun of me for it. For example, at school, there are no recycling bins in the cafeteria, so when I’m finished with my vitamin water, I put it in my purse and recycle it at home. This is what she said when I did that: “you don’t need to do that, one bottle won’t hurt anything.” She’s my best friend, but sometimes I just want to smack her in the face and say, “wake up, you careless blonde!” Americans use 4 million plastic bottles every hour! Yet only 1 bottle out of 4 is recycled. An average time for a plastic bottle to biodegrade fully is approximately 450-1000 years. I know I sound like a freak, but how can I convice my friend to start acting green?

The Expert answers:

Well if shes really your friend,
she should understand.
I think that you should talk to the school about getting
recycle bins and stuff.
You should get like a group of people that understand
your care for the environment, and maybe she will get the messege 🙂
good luck green girl*
GO GREEN
ps by saying that you sound like a freak, you sound like a freak even more..
Just saying 😀

Thomas asks…

How do I get my school to go green?

This summer my friend and I really got into the whole going green thing. We have recycled even more, planted a tree, hugged trees (lol), and started doing those small things around the house. I love helping out with the environment and since school is starting I want my school to go green. How can I make this idea expand and work? I have thought of putting recycling bins outside and have small bins in classes. Also maybe turining off lights to conserve energy. Is it expensive to get solar panels for the school. My middle school did it, but i honestly do not know how. If you have any ideas to help me out that would be great.

The Expert answers:

Go to the class President and President of the Student Body and get them envolved. Have an assembly and invite someone to speak on this matter (why not ask Al Gore to come speak?) Get the student body educated and then break up into groups (perhaps by class) and each group would have to submit say 10 ideas. Then have a Committee for Energy and they would compile and present the most popular ideas to the faculty. Then the students would carry it out and help by reminding each other. Once you have this part completed, contact the local newspaper and see if they want to do a story on your school and your green efforts. Good luck to you all.

Richard asks…

I deleted an important video how do I get it back?

I need it for a school project.
Please help.
I emptied my recycle bin and didn’t know it was in it.
do you have any names?

Use asoftech photo recovery pro, it helped me many time to recover photos, videos, documents.

David asks…

Any tips for an Earth Day battle of the bands?

I have an Environmental Club at school that is going to challenge the other high schools in the region (6+ total) to a battle of the bands. All proceeds will be divided amongst the groups to fund for recycling bins. But how can I make this an “Earth Friendly”, “Earth-Conscious” concert?

Chris asks…

how can i start a recycling program in my town? (Clinton, UT)?

I have two children under 3 and worry about the impact my family has on the environment – disposable diapers, baby food jars, and just general garbage, aluminum cans, bottles, etc. We try to reduce & reuse whenever possible, but I really wish there was a recycling program where I live! There are bins for newspaper/phone book recycling at the local school but that is it. My neighborhood seems to be very behind in this regard. How can I get my city council to do something about it!

The Expert answers:

Next town meeting bring it up.

Robert asks…

Recycling and containers that foods are bought in at stores, why do they do that?

Why do they put glue thats almost impossible to get off? when people would probably use them again, some are microwaveable some look pretty good like ones you buy, alot you could use for drinking glasses bowls etc.if they would just make them alittle different.WE WOULD HAVE ALOT LESS GARBAGE EH?

The Expert answers:

EH I hear you loud and clear . But most people jsut toss them without thinking. And Walmart and their green pitch , Im wondering why they package the meat the way they do if they are so green.

Laura asks…

Why do the recycling centres not allow us to recycle plastic containers that have had food in them?

We try to recycle most things & then get told we can’t recycle these.
We always wash them well so theres no food left in them.

The Expert answers:

This is most likely because they don’t want to wash or seperate it.

There is a huge demand for PEHD and PP in this country with the UK recycling industry having to import lorry loads from abroad because it can’t be sourced locally.

PET (as mentioned above) is the least valuable to them, and most of it gets exported to China.

I wish I could explain why UK councils are being so short sighted about this – it makes no sense to me either. I fear all they are doing is meeting the latest Central government target and nothing more.

William asks…

Can I put plastic containers in the recycling bin that laundry soap came in?

If a #2 is the plastics recycling code, can it still be recycled? Someone told me it can’t.

The Expert answers:

Yes u can. I am married to a trash man and he says they can be recycled!

Joseph asks…

Do I NEED to rinse out food containers before recycling them?

I always thought I HAD to, ever since the adverts a few years ago with the mommy dog who rinses off the foil she used to wrap the bone she was giving to her puppy. I recycle a lot and most of the time it isn’t necessary. However, when I do feel it’s necessary and take a moment to give them a cursory rinse, I feel like I’m wasting water.

The Expert answers:

Yeah, the actual recycling process doesn’t require it as the high heats will burn it off anyways. Washing things off is to keep pests away and for the health of the people who have to pick up your recycling.

Steven asks…

What happens to plastic containers at a recycling facility if they don’t have a number?

How do you know if your local recycling facility uses people or electronics to determine the type of plastic? If it’s people, how do they tell what type it is if it doesn’t have a number? Or if the number is really small and hard to read, how much time do they typically spend trying to determine the type of plastic before giving up and throwing it away?

The Expert answers:

If the system is using electronics to identify the type of plastic then they will go to the right place. If it’s using humans then it will end up in the trash.

Mark asks…

Is it okay to recycle the quart oil containers in the recycling bin? Doesnt the oil mess up the process?

Why does it have a number 2 engraved on the bottom like milk cartons?

The Expert answers:

They are the same material as milk cartons; just much stronger. Any recycled plastic has to be cleaned and ground before being reused. Materials like aluminum, glass, and steel/iron are remelted at such an intense heat level, that contaminants are just incinerated. Plastic is remelted at about 500F.

Paul asks…

how do I classify plastic bottles/containers for recycling?

The Expert answers:

Plastic. Then there is metal and glass.

Daniel asks…

Ideas on recycling those round powered baby formula containers?

They don’t have a recycling program where I live and I’m running out of uses.

The Expert answers:

If you’re so concerned about the planet you BF nazi, why don’t you off yourself? That would save on carbon emissions AND fertilize a tree!

I mostly throw them out (in the recycle), i gave one to my daughter to play with. You could use them to hold pens, flour, sugar, cereals (like tupperware).

Or you could put them all outside when it rains and collect rain water for storage.

I wonder if there is some way to turn them into bird houses? You could grow seedlings in them (punch holes in the bottom to let water run out).

John asks…

What empty containers does the MAC cosmetics recycling program accept?

I have a lot of empty fluidline jars, but some people have told me they only accept plastic empties so I need a clarification.

The Expert answers:

The only things that are not accepted are brushes, wooden products (most eye and lip pencils), and in most regions, eyeshadow pots without the silver pan. Fluidlines are accepted, but if you want to make sure, all the boxes of items that can be returned have a Back 2 MAC logo on one of the inner flaps.

Susan asks…

i live in pa, can i get money for plastic bottles by taking them to a state that gives cash for recycling?

if you live in pa could you still take plastic bottles to a state that offers cash back and benefit from that states program?
also in those states do they take any bottles, or just those that are marked with their state on the label? for ex: would michigan take bottles that are only marked NY and ME?

The Expert answers:

If the state is marked on the bottle, they will most likely take it. If you get caught though you will get a large fine and no $$. We pay the 5c to the store when we buy it, then get the 5c back when we return it. If you’re bringing in cans from another state where the 5c isn’t paid then someone has to make up the difference somewhere.

Charles asks…

Where can I get cash for recycling old computers & monitors?

In Kentucky.

The Expert answers:

There is no place that I know of that pays for “techno trash”. However you are doing the planet and everyone else a great service by using a recyling place either arranged by your town or such as “CRT recycling” located on East Ashland in Brocton MA. If you have enough stuff to make the trip to your home feasible or they have a scheduled pickup in your area, then they will pick the stuff up for free. I believe you can get a TAX deduction for making the deposit with them. They take most electronic stuff, but see their website or call them to make sure.
Contact info:
175 East Ashland Street Brockton, Massachusetts 02302
PH# 1 (800) 944-7019 FAX (508) 427-9311

I have included a second link that looks interesting for busiinesses that generate or turn over a lot of techno junk as they put it, but did not check the particulars.

Richard asks…

Where can I recycle and cash-in non-bottle plastics?

I live in San Diego. I have amassed a collection of clear plastic bottles and other non-bottle shaped plastics. I wanted to redeem them for cash, but my local recycling plant says they only accept “things you can drink out of”. I didn’t think it worked that way, because the non-bottle shaped stuff looks like its made of the same material as the bottles, and they have the recyce symbol on them as well. So, are thee recycling plants around that accept a greater variety of recyclables?

The Expert answers:

At your local bank

William asks…

recycling for cash?

I recently read in a magazine that i can recycle paper, bottles, and other things and turn them in for cash. The article didn’t really tell me how to go about doing this

does anyone know how or where i can turn that stuff in for money? I live in PA if that makes a difference

please and thank you!

The Expert answers:

There are a couple of ways that you can get cash to recycle.

First, in some states, there is a per-can or per-bottle deposit. In these states, you pay a few cents extra at the supermarket for each can or bottle you buy, and you get these few cents back when you return the can or bottle back to the store. This reduces litter, because fewer bottles and cans are tossed outside. And the ones that are, are collected by people and returned for the extra cash. Unfortunately for you, Pennsylvania is not one of those states.

The other way is to separate out the paper, glass and plastic by type and color, and sell it by the ton. Prices for these materials run between $10 and $100 per ton, but glass needs to separated by color, plastic by type and color, etc.

Unless you have large quantities of paper, plastic or glass to sell, it is difficult to make it worth your time to sell them. Some metals, like copper or aluminum, can be worth more money. But most consumers don’t have a whole lot of copper or aluminum waste.

Sorry. Good luck.

Sandra asks…

Cell Phone Recycling For Cash?

Where can I do my bit for the environment and earn some bucks as well?

The Expert answers:

If your cell phone’s got some life in it, try putting it up for auction on eBay. That way, you get some cash plus someone else for whom a cell phone is a necessity / luxury might just find your offer useful.

But if you’re looking to turn this into a business of sorts, one place to check is this site: http://urltea.com/1gwo

It might be a green thing to do for a part-time venture.

Donna asks…

Cans for cash?

Mark asks…

Where to recycle for cash in Toledo, Ohio?

I hear of people turning in their saved pop cans and plastic bottles for extra cash but I don’t know where to find them. I hear some stores have those machines in the back that take those items and give you money in return. Again, I hear of them but no one tells me which stores or where to go or what recycling centers does this. Can anyone help out?

The Expert answers:

In Michigan Wal Marts,Glynnes stores have the machines,in most cases they are for deposit return if you pay a deposit you get greater money back ie 5 cents. If you pay no deposit then you will get money by weight contact a scrap metal dealer for aluminum can prices generally 75 cents per pound plastic pop bottles no weight prices generally by tonne for plastic

Betty asks…

Cash for Cans program in Georgia?

Is there a Cash for Cans program near Duluth, Georgia? I think it would be a good idea for my family to start recycling and what better incentive then some cash? Are there any programs that will give cash for recycled cans preferably near Duluth, Georgia?

The Expert answers:

There are recycle centers all over the city. Aluminum cans pay about 74 cents a pound. Do you know how many cans it takes to get one pound of aluminum? Appoximately 30 – 40 cans. It would take over 250 cans for you to earn $5.00

Not a huge motivator in my opinion.

Thomas asks…

Where can I recycle cans for cash near Hastings, MN?

Michael asks…

How much money could I get for recycling soda cans, glass, and plastic in California?

I am trying to make a couple extra bucks and I figured recycling is a good way to make a couple extra bucks. So I was wondering how much money I could get by recycling soda cans, glass, plastic (like waterbottles), and paper/cardboard. 10 points for the most accurate and best info. Thanks

The Expert answers:

You can indeed make some extra money by simply recycling your household aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass containers. My family seperates our recyclables into three plastic bins and then turns them into our local recycling center once a month. We usuallly get anywhere between $12.00 -$22.00 depending on how much we turn in. It doesn’t take much effort, it helps the enviornment, and you are really just getting the money back since you pay extra for the CRV (California Redemption Value) when you buy the can, bottle, or container at the store. To find the nearest recycling center in your area, use the link below and enter your zip code.

For more information, I would suggest checking with the Integrated Waste Management Board. The Board is partnering with the private sector, the EPA, and the other states to provide citizens with an environmental information system that can be customized for each community. The system, which operates over the Internet and through an interactive phone system, provides a single source of community-specific environmental and recycling information. This information is available 24 hours a day over the Internet at www.earth911.org. And by dialing 1-800-CLEAN-UP. Once you enter your five-digit ZIP code, you’ll be able to access a wide variety of information, including local recycling information, household hazardous waste collections, and environmental events.

Do you know any place near Charleston Illinois that gives you money for recycling cans and bottles?

Do you know any place near Charleston Illinois that gives you money for recycling cans and bottles?
I need money for my son Pix and I. Plus, I am having a baby, not soon, but about a few weeks in to pregnancy. I was looking for extra money. We have a fair amount, but more would just be wonderful and people litter in our yard all the time so I was looking for places to recycle, not just for money but it is good for the earth too. Where I live the trash truck doesn’t recycle. I was just wondering. Thanks

Donna asks…

Are people who redeem cans and bottles at recycling center looked upon as bums or low-lifes?

I myself don’t have that much money and I save all my cans and bottles and then take them to a recycling center for redemption. However, no one else that I know personally does that at all. Am I a bum just because I do this?

The Expert answers:

No. It falls into the area of “opportunistic scavaging” that is quite respectable. Like hunting for treasure with a metal detector or collecting wild mushrooms.

Michigan has a 10 cent deposit, and EVERYONE recycles their bottles and cans.

Mandy asks…

Is it illegal to pick out cans from somone’s recycling bin?

I was wondering if it is illegal to pick through somone’s set out recycling bin for the aluminum cans. The cans would be collected then traded in for money. I know it is unethical but the question is in the legality. Area is Bell County, Texas.

The Expert answers:

It is illegal, we have curbside recycling where I used to live and the recycling belongs to the city as soon as it hits the bin. The city where I used to live would set up stings and arrest and prosecute people. Recycling is a source of revenue for the city and they use a variety of methods to protect it. I’ve seen news stories on stake outs in neighborhoods and they ofter use spray that can only be seen with a black light, the recycle centers then shine a light on the materials and if any of them glow you get arrested and lose all your materials.

How do i get a recycle bin in both hard rives on my laptop?

On my secondary hard rive each time i delete something it doesn’t go to the recycle bin.

The Expert answers:

Recycle Bin properties can be set for the whole system as a whole or for drives independently.

It sounds like you have the drives set to independent settings.

Right click on the recycle bin and select properties.

You can make changes to this setup in here.

If you have it set independently you can make changes on the individual drive tabs. It’s a good bet your secondary drive has the “Do not move files to the recycle bin” option selected.

If you want everything to go to the same recycle bin and have a setting that works for both the same, select “Use one setting for all drives”.

Plastic Recycling, cans and metal from garbage bin?

Hi Everyone,

I am from Toronto Canada and currently facing a financial crisis and I have a family to feed. In Toronto, the blue bins (which has plastic bottles, cans, and papers) are put outside in the street every Wednesday for the government to pick it up. So my question is Can I pick up some of the plastic bottles and then resell them to a local buyer of plastics? If yes, I might be able to generate 30-40 dollars a day and that will rally help me in many ways financially.

Thank you

The Expert answers:

The best place to check on this is Toronto’s garbage-collection agency.
Logically they should be glad to have less to pick up, but if the city is selling recyclables themselves, they may not be pleased. You may need to save your own bottles and ask some neighbors to give theirs directly to you.

Ruth asks…

What is the general recycling process?

Chain store shopping bags recyclable?

I have accumulated alot of those thick shiny retailer plastic bags (not the clear ones supermarkets have) I reuse them but are they recyclable in that I can dump them in the recycling garbage bin we have outside (that accepts plastic bottles, glass, paper etc) or is the only way to recycle is to use them as much as possible?

The Expert answers:

In my area, you can’t put them in with other plastics, but the grocery stores send them somewhere. I work in a thrift store, and we rely on people bringing in bags for us to reuse. We love those heavy retail ones! Check thrift stores in your area…

Ken asks…

How do I start recycling?

I have a huge family, and in turn, we are churning out a huge amount of garbage. I’m really determined to start recycling, but I’m not sure about how to do it. We have recycling bins, and suppposedly, you can throw everything in it- plastic, paper, etc and they will sort it for you.
Right now, I’m snipping the plastic rings off of milk jugs and coke bottles and uncapping and rinsing them out and peeling off the labels…. is there anything else I should be doing to them?

Any tips about recycling would be helpful : )

The Expert answers:

Beyond the recycling of refuse there are many things a large family can do to cut down on waste, and I bet you’re already doing a lot of it. You want to reduce the amount of stuff coming into your house, so be active about buying things with minimal packaging. Take your own re-usable bags to the grocery store. Don’t buy water in bottles- use sturdy ones with their own filters if that’s a priority for you. With a big family you are probably already handing down usable clothing to one another, not wasting food, and being efficient amount your utilities. With many people in your house you could probably do more about turning off unused appliances and a big thing would be to convert your light bulbs to CFLs, they will help the environment and save your family big bucks. Try not to use throwaway plates, utensils, etc. And I encourage you to start a campaign to quit using plastic straws and cup lids. They are unnecessary, don’t biodegrade, and can hurt wildlife. Overall, take ” Reduce, Re-use, Recycle” as your mantra and just do what you can. Everything helps!!

Lisa asks…

Annoying neighbor moving my garbage cans!?

Our next door neighbor parks their car on our curbside everyday, it is not like they don’t have their own curbside! there do that even on garbage pickup days, which are wednesdays. there park their car very close to our driveway and we got barely enough rooms to put our garbage and recycling bins. what’s very frustrating is that their car was here again so there was no choice but to put it very close to their car which we do every week but this time they MOVEd our recycling and garbage cans and placed it on the sidewalk!!!!

The Expert answers:

You will have to have a polite conversation with them or leave note on their car asking them not to park there on trash day. Can you figure out why they are parking in front of your house instead of in front of their house?

Daniel asks…

How come the garbage at fast food restaurants is recyclable yet they have no bins at the restaurant to recycle

Seriously what is the point of having recyclables and no place to recycle them?

The Expert answers:

Because they don’t really care. 🙂 Same reason starbucks has recycle bins but not for customer access, and companies like the one I work for have them, but people still throw away things they shouldn’t, even soda cans….We are still as a whole a less then caring public and until public demand gets higher to have access to recycle bins, and are using them correclty, companies will not be in compliance. 🙂

Laura asks…

I got fined $250 for having a “garbage can” on the balcony, except it was a recycling bin. Do I have a case?

Hey guys.

I came home today to find a notice that the condo company is charging me $250 for having a garbage can on the balcony, but it was actually a recycling bin.

The bylaw states:

“An owner/tenant shall not deposit customary household refuse and garbage outside his redivision unit or the building on his Bare Land unit…”

So, with that said, recyclable cans are not garbage. Refuse means something that is worthless and has no value–basically a synonym for garbage. Recyclable pop cans and garbage aren’t the same thing, especially since they are worth 10 cents per can nowadays.

Anyways, how should I approach this? I’m sending an email of pictures of the recycling bin to the condo company and demanding they take it off. Their bylaw was not specific enough, and I feel like I have a case. Will I have to take this to small claims court?

Thanks for your answers!

Nancy asks…

Is the tap water in America treated waste water?

Today on Yahoo! In the News one of the headlines is ‘Australian state to drink recycled water.’ I always thought everyone’s tap water was recycled. I don’t mean naturally recycled in the water cycle, but in waste water treatment plants. Is the tap water in America treated waste water? If so, what is the big concern in Australia — is it just because its disgusting to think about?

The Expert answers:

There are at least 2 types of water for recyling. Grey water & black water. Grey water is from baths/showers, dishwashing, laundry, hand washing. Black water is from the toilet. Grey water is recycled/treated to go back through your taps. I have never heard of black water being used for this purpose. It is called un-potable(not good for human consumption)& is used for construction sites, roadwork, watering fields etc. Sure hope this clears up things for you.

Mary asks…

If water goes down a drain and is recaptured and recycled, how can water waste occur?

Wouldn’t water waste occur only if the water was used and didn’t return to be used again?

The Expert answers:

Water supply systems are not closed loop. The processed waste water is returned downstream and replaced with fresh water. So the waste stream does not replenish the reservoir. There are also costs involved in delivering the water and processing the waste water.

Paul asks…

Why do people tell you not to waste water when all water is recycled?

How are wer wasting water if it is sent to the water treatment and reused?

The Expert answers:

Because all waters has not good quality. When you waste water most likely this vital substance seep into underground and passes through salty layers and deteriorated its quality.

Lizzie asks…

Which is better: to waste water rinsing out a glass jar for recycling or to just throw it away in the trash?

The Expert answers:

Throwing it away would be worse.

And generally speaking you do not have to rinse it out, because the recycling plant will rinse all of them in very hot water to remove any remaining paper and glue before they melt them down.

James asks…

Water recycling?

Whats the best way of recycling home waste water from the bathroom, wash basins and kitchen for re-use and reduce wastage?

The Expert answers:

First reduce the amount of detergents that you use, then collect the waste water from your bath or sink etc – most houses remove waste water via an outside soil pipe that goes into the main drainage system – why not divert this into a rain butt/s. Then you can use the water on the garden. Waste from toilets must go to the system so that it can be purified by the digesters and then recycled back to you through the mains water supply, what do you mean you didn’t know that you drink re-cycled water in the cities.
On a slightly different tack, does one really believe that there is a shortage of water in this country – the true shortage is in the WILL to collect, store and use all the water that we get for free from the sky. Water that could be used for domestic uses as well as used to drive turbines to generate electricity via hydro electric power schemes. A few hundred years ago water power provided nearly ALL our energy needs, domestic and industrial, surely with modern technology we could still use this undervalued resource!

Hi – by waste water I’m guessing you mean grey water (washing-up, bath, etc), but you might be including rainwater too? For small scale application water-butts will do the job and kits are available from DIY shops to control any overflow of rainwater. Grey water can be piped into an under soil soak-away, but that’s not really conserving it.

On a larger scale you might want to think about reed and gravel beds with a pool/pond/lake to hold the ‘cleaned’ water (you might need further filtration/UV light treatment to make the water safe for personal use or even drinking. I believe it’s possible to buy a system of tanks containing sand/gravel that do the job too.

Hope this is of some help – have a Google around the subject and I’m sure there’s lots of Info available – and probably better than mine…
Good luck

William asks…

My waste water from my upstairs bathroom is closed in.I wish to recycle my grey water, how can I do this?

I have tried using a hosepipe to syphon the waste water but it is impossible as the hosepipe has to come over the windowsill and am not able to syphon it .Any good ideas please

The Expert answers:

It is not clear what you mean by “closed in.” Are you trying to say that there is no proper drain for your upstairs bathroom? Toilet water is not considered “gray water,” only perhaps the sink and a tub or shower water.

Recycling plumbing water usually implies a second set of piping from the appropriate fixtures to a collection location. It is not entirely clear what you are trying to do.

Let us say for the sake of argument that instead of taking tub water and letting it go down the drain you wanted to toss it out the window instead. There are 3 ways that you could do this without putting (too much) extra piping in.

First it is not impossible to siphon water over a hump (like a windowsill.) You only have to have no air from the top of the hump to the surface of the water (and a little more) You do this by sucking the water over the hump to get it started or first filling the pipe.

You could use a wet dry vac to suck the water up and then if the vac was higher than the window sill you could easily siphon it out.

Another way is to simply use a pump.

These are simple ways but they don’t allow you to capture all the water. More complicated would be to cut into the floor and interrupt the piping allowing it to drain into a tank with a pump inside. These are already available as something you would put in a basement for a laundry sink where your drain lines are above floor level.

George asks…

I am looking for information on how to treat the waste water mixed with carbonated soft drinks residue.?

I want to help the carbonated soft drinks bottle recycling factory next door to solve its waste water treatment issue, which is now runoff the drainage without any treatment. Also, I need to know whether or not flowing such waste water into the drainage or river without any treatment is acceptable from the environmental point of view?

John asks…

Burn body waste, create 2 water lines 1 4 drinking other for washing R U a nation in poverty? recycling wash?

U know it is all borrewed money in the economic system. Past ?’s tell me that the world has no foresight in the economic problems in 2025, people being born and people dieing. Will U still be drinking your bottled water and not burning your sewage. It’s all the wealth any country can offer it’s people. No treated water should be put back into the river, lakes and ocean. Burn it.

The Expert answers:

Yes. That would benefit the environment. In Europe they do it in some places. Burning body waste would however still have a environmentalist cost and I’m not so sure that cost is lower than what we do today.
