Michael asks…
How much money could I get for recycling soda cans, glass, and plastic in California?
I am trying to make a couple extra bucks and I figured recycling is a good way to make a couple extra bucks. So I was wondering how much money I could get by recycling soda cans, glass, plastic (like waterbottles), and paper/cardboard. 10 points for the most accurate and best info. Thanks
The Expert answers:
You can indeed make some extra money by simply recycling your household aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass containers. My family seperates our recyclables into three plastic bins and then turns them into our local recycling center once a month. We usuallly get anywhere between $12.00 -$22.00 depending on how much we turn in. It doesn’t take much effort, it helps the enviornment, and you are really just getting the money back since you pay extra for the CRV (California Redemption Value) when you buy the can, bottle, or container at the store. To find the nearest recycling center in your area, use the link below and enter your zip code.
For more information, I would suggest checking with the Integrated Waste Management Board. The Board is partnering with the private sector, the EPA, and the other states to provide citizens with an environmental information system that can be customized for each community. The system, which operates over the Internet and through an interactive phone system, provides a single source of community-specific environmental and recycling information. This information is available 24 hours a day over the Internet at www.earth911.org. And by dialing 1-800-CLEAN-UP. Once you enter your five-digit ZIP code, you’ll be able to access a wide variety of information, including local recycling information, household hazardous waste collections, and environmental events.

Do you know any place near Charleston Illinois that gives you money for recycling cans and bottles?
Do you know any place near Charleston Illinois that gives you money for recycling cans and bottles?
I need money for my son Pix and I. Plus, I am having a baby, not soon, but about a few weeks in to pregnancy. I was looking for extra money. We have a fair amount, but more would just be wonderful and people litter in our yard all the time so I was looking for places to recycle, not just for money but it is good for the earth too. Where I live the trash truck doesn’t recycle. I was just wondering. Thanks

Donna asks…
Are people who redeem cans and bottles at recycling center looked upon as bums or low-lifes?
I myself don’t have that much money and I save all my cans and bottles and then take them to a recycling center for redemption. However, no one else that I know personally does that at all. Am I a bum just because I do this?
The Expert answers:
No. It falls into the area of “opportunistic scavaging” that is quite respectable. Like hunting for treasure with a metal detector or collecting wild mushrooms.
Michigan has a 10 cent deposit, and EVERYONE recycles their bottles and cans.

Is it illegal to pick out cans from somone’s recycling bin?
I was wondering if it is illegal to pick through somone’s set out recycling bin for the aluminum cans. The cans would be collected then traded in for money. I know it is unethical but the question is in the legality. Area is Bell County, Texas.
The Expert answers:
It is illegal, we have curbside recycling where I used to live and the recycling belongs to the city as soon as it hits the bin. The city where I used to live would set up stings and arrest and prosecute people. Recycling is a source of revenue for the city and they use a variety of methods to protect it. I’ve seen news stories on stake outs in neighborhoods and they ofter use spray that can only be seen with a black light, the recycle centers then shine a light on the materials and if any of them glow you get arrested and lose all your materials.
